Old Cat, New Cat

ket-cica-egy-kepenExcitement towards adding a new cat to your home from your side is not questionable, however, for the cat you already own it can be very frustrating. As most cats are solitary by nature, it will take some time to accept or eventually tolerate any additions.  Cats can be very territorial, which is why you should always be careful when you introduce a new cat to your current cat.

Temperament and personality are two characteristics that will affect the way the cats will accept each other.  When you introduce a new cat to your current cat, you should always make sure that you give your current cat plenty of love and attention.  Continue doing the same things with your current cat as he/she is used to.  This way, your cat will feel secure and know that he/she isn’t in competition with your new cat for affection.

Introduce things you used to do with your current cat to the new cat step by step.  Feeding them at the same time, playing with them together, taking them out for a walk simultaneously are important to keep them both happy and healthy.

Reinforcements in Cats

macska-hintanI think we all agree that our home is more complete if we have a four legged pet there to greet us after a hard day at work or snuggle up to us while we sleep.  Cats are fickle as well as sweet, lovable creatures.  Most cats recognize their owners by the sound of their voice, the car they drive, and who spoils them the most.  Like dogs, cats can be trained too.  A cat can be trained to come to your call, to bring their toys when they want to play, to go for a walk on a leash or in a cat stroller, as well as more domestic issues such as using a litter box.  The key to training a cat or kitten is reinforcement.

It is typically wise to start out reinforcement with a kitten, but it can be introduced any time in a cat’s life.  Cats are very good in distinguishing tones of your voice, not the words though.  They will know they have done something right/wrong just by the tone of voice you use.  Reinforcement is either positive (hugs, petting, treats, play) or negative (water, raised voice).  Positive reinforcement will make them do things by their own.  If you make them used to something they like, they will keep coming back and “demanding” it from you.   And the way they show appreciation is something that soon you will be aiming for.

Aging Pets

pet-trailer-jogger-combo-navy-blueDogs or cats age more rapidly than a humans, the average being seven times faster.  By age two, dogs and cats are considered adults and middle aged by the time they hit four.  Cats and dogs in general are seniors when they reach 8 to 10 years of age.

Putting this in perspective, seven years of a human’s life equals about 45 for a medium-sized dog and approximately 55 years for a cat. With this rapid aging, the risks of various diseases, illnesses also increase.  A major factor in keeping your pet happy and healthy in its senior years, is taking your cat or dog to a veterinarian on a regular basis, however it’s also important for you to take your own role in your pet’s health.

Exercise your senior pet.  Your pet is probably not able to run around quite as fast or quite as easily as when it was younger, however you can still take your dog for a walk.  You will likely need to slow down or consider an alternative when going for a walk.  Pet jogging strollers can help you and you pet continue enjoying the old routines.

With a little care and vigilance on your part, your pet will enjoy a long life, and its senior years will be happy and healthy.

No More Barking

jp8333vrControlling your dog’s barking behavior might be very frustrating.   Some dogs get too aggressive to the point that they become disturbing and irritating to your family and your neighborhood, while others bark excessively for some weird reasons.  Many dog owners find themselves clueless and unsure as to what must be done to solve this behavior.

Primarily make sure you’re giving your canine all the things and necessities he needs.  If their needs are not being met, the barking might be a cry or signal that he waits for your care and assistance.  Always ensure that you give them the right amount of food and water everyday.

If your beloved pet barks, you might observe that they are either bored or energetic, or beg for a little attention.  Don’t let your dog be confined inside your house, instead, take him outside where he can play and interact with other dogs as often as you can.   A dog that is properly trained to socialize with people and other animals will not bark excessively. Training your dog is a great way to improve his physical and mental stimulation.  Dogs naturally enjoy the outdoor and like to experience new things.  The barking problem may be solved when the dog is taken on regular walks.  To keep them happy, consider something new for them, a pet jogger for instance that will create a slightly different environment while outside.

Finicky Cats

sportster-cat-strollersAmazingly cats are very independent and selective animals.   For sure you experienced this behavior quite often if you own a cat.   Forget about calling them, they will come to you only if they want to do so and not when you want them to. When it comes to food, well, almost nothing will 100% satisfy them.

Nowadays there are so many gifts to share with our four legged friends.  There are gifts in the way of treats and toys for them.   And then there is a novelty gift that you might consider if you have an indoor cat that you’d like to experience the out world as well.   Strollers for cats are more and more popular and convenient way of satisfying your finicky cat’s needs. This is a gift they for sure won’t say no to, and will jump in it to go for a stroll any time you call them.

Carrying for your Cat

sporty-pet-jogger-pinkPlaytime is just as important to the overall wellbeing of your cat as a trip to the vet.  There is no need to spend a lot of money on cat toys.  Most of the time, your cat will find many things in your house to play with.   Whether you spend a lot of money on the toy or not, it won’t make a difference.  Why buy an expensive toy when you have so many free options readily available?

Cats love to climb and rest in places where they can see outside.   A sunny window could be their favourite place, and if the windows are high, the cat gets some well-needed exercise jumping from shelf to shelf to get to their spot.   Cats also love boxes.  Much like children, a cat can occupy itself for hours playing with a box.   You can cut holes in it, line it with carpeting or old towels, and your new kitten will love it.   Take a few boxes, tape them together, and build your cat a fort. Catnip toys are easy to make too.  All you need is a little bit of cloth or furry material to sew into a pouch.  Fill it with catnip and stitch some Velcro on to hold it closed.  You can make it into a size and shape that appeals to your cat.  Don’t worry, catnip is perfectly safe for your cat to enjoy.  And if you have one of those laser pointers, your cat will enjoy chasing it. Just make sure that you don’t shine the laser directly into your cat’s eyes.

Toys don’t have to be fancy or expensive at all and aren’t a reflection of your level of cat care.  The only investment required is your time.   And if your cat loves to be outside, take the time and go for a walk with them.  A pet carrier can be a perfect gift for them.  Fresh air, new smells, animals around, it is a lot of excitement for your cat.

Fat Cats

royale_onetouchDid you know that dog’s and cat’s obesity is the number one pet health problem that vets see today? Of course, you love your cat and want the best for it, but you have to make sure to treat them well and right.  Just like humans, if a cat (or any other pet) takes in more calories than its body can burn, the cat will gain weight.   If in the wild, a cat uses up a lots of energy to hunt down and catch its prey.  A domestic cat though that lives indoors doesn’t have to hunt and fight for its food.  Food is right there waiting for felines any time they want it - the perfect environment for a fat cat.

We tend to refuse to see the fact that too much food is the cause of our cat having weight problems. You may not be feeding your cat many treats, but you may be feeding them too much at one time and/or too often. Veterinarians suggest that you serve your cat two to four meals a day - and think in ounces, not cups. 0.6 to 1.0 ounces per serving is plenty.

Cats need a meat-based diet with high levels of protein. Research shows that diets high in fat and protein are best for carnivores such as cats, combined with plenty of exercise of course.  Try to help your cat burn extra calories. Unfortunately, you can’t go for walks with your cat as you would with your dog.  Some cats might take leash training, but it’s rare.   If you really want to get your cat outside, consider a cat stroller in which they can sit comfortably and experience the out-world forgetting to sleep and eat, for a while at least.  As we all know, a typical domestic cat’s day consists of sleeping, eating, sleeping, and then waking up to sleep some more.  You need to provide your cat some toys that they love playing with or other interesting things to do, like looking forward to a stroll in the park.
